Like Faded Buntings (on a Roadside Tree)

Like faded buntings
On a roadside tree
I am reminded
Of you and me

Of how we flailed
Our arms, as if we were
On a rollercoaster
Enjoying the rush

But then, like bump cars
We kept bumping
Into each other’s
Opinions, each other’s most prized ideals

Then after that, our life
Was a big, gaudy
Merry-go-round
We went round and round (and round…)

Our last time together
Was our last ride together
In this theme-park love affair
Making me dizzy and feeling sick…

(And not wanting to do it all over again.)
